Two weeds together?

I thought I might be growing something quite pretty here but now I don't think so. The plant with the tiny yellow flower is everywhere and almost growing through it is some kind of grass I suppose. Shall I dig it all up?

Thanks for the replies. I don't mind it, but if it is a true weed I don't want it to spread everywhere.
You are right about the photo owdboggy, I always think I'm close enough, but never am.

It looks like the weed with a leaf that resembles a geum. Not sure what the correct name is but I know what you mean when you say it looks like a proper plant. But it isn't. I dig them up all the time.

A weed is anything that grows where you don't want it. If you do want it, you can move it to a more appropriate spot. But this looks like a nice mass of different weeds, with some forget-me-nots too. The yellow stuff looks prolific and familiar, and the other plants would benefit from its removal, I think. It's always nice to see green stuff at the beginning of spring, but I have learned to be a bit ruthless, as it takes over and is then much more difficult to get rid of.

The little yellow flower is a wild geum or Avens. It is a british native and if you like it keep it if not it is a weed. [a weed in my garden as i dont like geums particularly.]
cant make out the other grass like thing. pretty forgetme nots though :o)

Thanks all of you. Some digging tomorrow I think.

Yes. Tomorrow. Because if you leave them they will seed themselves all over the place, including right in the middle of the clumps of your best plants. They are a menace. You will find young ones growing throughout the year so just keep at it. And this time next year more will appear because you will have seeds in the earth from previous years. You just need to try and keep on top of them as much as possible.

Right, I'm squinting at this picture and I can see Berdoc - that's the one that looks like a Geum I think - the seeds it produces have hooks on them that attach themselves to animal fur - I'm forever picking them off my cat in the summer.!!! Dig it all out right away - the leaves break off if you pull them, so get a trowell or handfork and lever them out as you pull.
The grassy thing looks like Carex pendula, which is a British native. It is a nice looking thing that prefers a woodland habitat and dampish soil. I like that one, so you might like to keep it - has a oriental look to it I think.
You have a bearded iris in the background - you need to clear the weeds from around that one as it likes the roots to be baked by the sun, whcih it wont if there are too many weeds!

Definitely get the wild 'geum' out - my daughter has it in her garden, and it is a real menace. I am always having to dig it out. It seeds everywhere. I would just get the fork and dig the whole clump out, grass and all! Sid's right - you can't just pull this weed out.

Thanks Sid and Spritz, everyone seems to agree - get rid of it. I must say it seems to be all over the place and certainly wasn't last year so it's got to go. Teach me to think 'oh that's pretty' and leave it.

Sid, burdock is a large plant that when fully grown is about 3ft tall but just like geum it uses hooked seeds for dispersal. clever things plants :o)

So if my weed is burdock and I put it together with my many dandelions perhaps I can start a little business making my very own dandelion and burdock drink. I'll start saving plastic bottles now!
Thanks everyone.

can you still get dandelion and burdock? i always preffered saspirella :o)

I am so glad I asked the weed question. Have spent 2 days digging the geum out and, as Iverglen suggested, it was right in the middle of many plants. Found lots of clumps of the grass too, which I also dug up. I filled the green garden bin to the top and have another barrow full waiting.
Thanks everyone.
