I found vine weevil grubs in my compost bin. does this mean the compost is unusable, or can I use a use a diluted mix to kill them without destroying the rest of the creatures who are necessary to the compost bin?

Hi Sounds like you may have maggots (flies)
or I have had a type of hover fly maggoty thing , any chance of a photo ??
Have you emptied and old compost in the that was in pots in the garden ?? , I dont know what type of compost bin you have but if available lots of lawn clippings mixed in hopfully this will raise the heat and naturaly kill them I woudnt want to usa a pesticide will only kill all the other good creatures.

Owdboggy I shan't be coming over to your house for a meal! I can't imagine what my family would say to me putting compost in the microwave. I am known for putting strange things in mine - but the box of matches was accidental and it wasn't switched on!!

The secret, Cammomile, is to do it when the family are all out!

I've just had a horrible thought of weevils 'popping' in the microwave - I couldn't do it myself but then I am, according to a very good friend, a closet whimp!

Me too camomile, just the thought of grubs popping is giving me a funny tummy. Y es I probably did empty them in from one of my pots, shall have to be more careful, thanks to you all for the comments. I shall use the more grass clippings option I think, and have recently moved my compost bins to a warmer area and they are heating up nicely. Ai would love to hear the origin go some of your user names. Mine is rather obvious, I sing in a barbershop chorus called Phoenix and we recently came third in a National competition, and of course I am a nanny.

Which ones do you want to know about?

Are you sure they are Vine weevil grubs. they do not usually inhabit compost bins, unless you have recently put infected material in it. They need fresh roots to feed on and there are normally none in compost.
However, the best thing to do would be to spread out the compost in a thin layer and leave it to the birds to eat the grubs for you.
Otherwise spread it out and go over it with a weed wand or a wall paper stripper.
Or, put it in a microwave oven bit by bit.
Or, put Provado Vine weevil killer in the compost.
But if they are V.W grubs don't use the compost in plant pots.
