my acer bush has less leaves on it this year and white spots have appered on the trunk and running up the branches can you help

Souinds like scale infestation - if the 'white spots' are fluffy white round the edges with a small, shield shaped bit in the centre, that's what it is. Lightly moisten a disposable cloth with methylated spirits and rub it over the wood of the tree, removing the scale insect as you go. Or use mild soap and water solution. Keep both off the leaves though...
