Hello, I have a row of hawthorn which was aroung ten feet high when I moved in. I found them a bit overpowering and cut them down to about six feet. But they are only bushy at the top and bare all the way to the bottom. How can I make them bushy all the way down. Any advice? Thanks.

Did you cut the side branches as well, that should encourage new growth, possibly a balanced feed and water.......even a foliar feed may help, we have a lot of hawthorn hedge, if its not regularly cut top and sides it does go bare.....probably wants to be a tree.........

Hawthorn surely can be cut right down as hedgers do it in their work, and it makes its way back again. Someone in our road cut a street planted hawthorn off half way up its trunk and it grew back again pretty quickly into a decent tree. Bit of watering after to encourage regrowth. We regularly lop quite big chunks off our big Hawthorn to try to keep it under control.
