Lawn for shade or normal?
By Ksoulika

Hello, we have a north facing garden that gets an average of 5-6 hours of sunshine from mid april until september but no sun at all from early october until late february. We have been struggling for 2 years to keep the lawn looking healthy but have failed miserably. What sort of lawn seeds should we get? For shade? or normal? or is there a mixture for these conditions?
Thank you for your help

Hi Ksoulika, I wouldn't bother with a lawn, especially if it is a small one. We took up our front lawn, laid down black membrane from a builders merchants, very cheap, and laid down a ton bag of pea shingle. Then we planted a few ornamental grasses, never looked back!

I don't exactly have a great track record when it comes to keeping grass in good condition, lol. However I met someone recently who had the lawn company Green Thumb and was very pleased with the results. He said they were very reasonable with their charges when you compared it to the cost of lawn fertiliser/weedkiller etc. I haven't seen his lawn for myself, all I know is that he seems to be a very keen gardener and was impressed with them.
If you are feeding and cutting your lawn regularly and aerating it every year, I don't know what else to suggest.

grass is quite hardy and its getting a good lump of sun a day.maybe you should dress your lawn and put lol of drainage holes in with a fork.i dont think the amount of sun is your problem
