Why is soil not absorbing water?

I have two Sollya planted in pots , they have been thriving for a year, they now seem to be dying and for some reason the soil they are planted in is not absorbing the water when i water them, can anyone help?

Some composts are very difficult to wet when they have completely dried out. Are they planted in peat-based compost? Try standing the pots in trays or bowls of water and leaving them to soak slowly.

If possible knock out of pots,cos if they are root bound that could be one explanation

yes you get like a hard crispy top and a slight gap down the sides.repotting sounds about right
