What happened to my Iris Bearded Nel Jape?
It was a lovely flower last year but seemed unhappy in clay so I put it in a pot after it flowered last year and this is what happened this year.
Many thanks for any help Denise.

My iris looked like that last year when hubby decided to surprise me by doing the garden for me, he strimmed it :( sorry no idea what else could be the cause x

Is the pot big enough Denise? And compost looks a little on the wet side... other than that not sure.

The pot is bigger than it looks, I thought it might have been on the dry side over the winter its only the last couple of months since its been like this that I have watered it. I did wonder if its because its in just compost?
I just looked it up and maybe its Soft rot which is a disease caused by Erwinia carotovora, a bacterial phytopathogen? But what to so?

They prefer to be in a free draining soil rather than compost. They need the rhizome to be baked for them to flower. The fact that they are in a pot where it is probably more likely to be moist than dry is not helping. I would suggest moving to either the border, or incorporate some stoney soil into your compost and plant in a shallower container. Then trim the leaves down to a neat snip where they are green and place where the rhizome can get as much sun as possible.

Thanks 2ndh I will try that. Should part of the rhizome be exposed as it is in the pot?

A lot of my irises look like that this year and they are in the ground. We have had a lot of rain and it could be from that not sure if mine have leaf spot so I am going to lift and divide them soon. Never had any problems before so presume its from the very wet weather we had

and yes the rhizome needs to be on the surface so dont bury it any deeper.
