No - you have a very happy and healthy Clematis there! Do you know which one it is? They all flower at different times of the year, so a name would be helpful.

Pruning also depends on which one it is.

Wow that looks healthy you must have got the planting conditions/depth just right. My guess is it is perhaps one of the Montanna's ? as it is so vigorous. Have you fed it?

Ah, I'm glad to hear I haven't done the wrong thing. both these plants came with the house.

These are the same two clematis that I put a picture up (from last year) a few days ago asking what the names were. The one on the right has been identified as a "Josephine" but the one the left which I thought was a Dr Ruppell is still a mystery as some people thought it didn't look like a Dr Ruppell at all. The pictures I put up then were from last year. The Josephine has 3 flowers right at the bottom of the plant (but nothing else) The other one has still not opened. As soon as it does I'll put a picture up sohopefully it can be identified.

Last year I cut them right back in Winter (not sure I did the right thing then.

I think the one on the left is Mrs N Thompson.

Looks like it might be. Looking at my pics from last year, I also realised the ones that show it in full bloom were taken in mid October! So maybe I am just being impatient LOL. Its normal for they to flower late maybe :)

Yes it flowers in May/June and again in September/Oct. Its pruning group 2 the RHC say - Clematis in pruning group two are the large-flowered hybrids that flower in May to June and should be pruned in late winter or early spring and after the first flush of flowers in summer.

Ah right. I don't think it ever flowered twice since we've been here. It just seems to start flowering late summer and then carry on for a while. They are usually the last flowers in the garden.

Late flowers are always very welcome.
