if this is what they are like at the mo they are probably purple sensation. i bury mine about 4" deep on grit/sand and then leave them undisturbed . they will keep coming year on year.

do they need staking? as the winds round here are whipping at the mo, and i havent yet got much else in the same beds?

I have staked a couple of mine as the stalks have got quite tall, but the others are fine

I have the same plant, and with their flower heads fully open. They have survived some horrendous winds today in Bracknell, a really screaming wind has been tearing at them. And they are all still standing. That's the ultimate test. Allium (Purple Sensation) definitely doesn't need staking.
