You don't need to cut it back in autumn, just let it die back naturally. A mulch of composted animal manure at the start of winter will help protect the crown during the cold weather.

Don't pull more than a couple of stems next year to let it establish well. Enjoy

As Steragram says, it usually needs a couple of years growing undisturbed to gather enough energy to produce succulent stalks.
