RHS Encyclopaedia...

I've got an old one of these, that I still love but it is the one published in 1994 so...well, old, lol.
I am thinking of getting a new one but is it worth it do you think?
I know there may be a few more plants but have things changed so much, including the book format, that I need a new one?

Like you, I have an old one and flicked through a new one in a bookshop recently and on that very brief inspection couldn't see much difference at all.

I saw one in W H Smiths at £35. may be cheaper in the sales.

Apart from it not having the latest fashionable introductions it is very much the same. I have one from 96 i think and havent planned to swap it yet. keep an eye on the book sale outlet shops, they often have glossy plant books reduced a heck of a lot.

Amazon have it for £24.50 which is very good and free postage too.

Anyway. Thanks, peeps. I'll save my money and might buy the Encyclopaedia of Gardening instead for £22.75. :o)
Adding:
Just bought it. Used a £10 voucher I had so got it for £12.75. Bargain!!!

We got ours many years ago for pence as an introductory offer when we joined a Book Club. It is now very well thumbed and I am thinking of looking for a second one (probably from a second hand book shop) so that we can have one in the potting shed and one in the sitting room.

Is your potting shed like a little home from home then, Bulb...? lol.
They are lovely books aren't they.
I do wonder if they've added all the new plants and cultivars that must surely have come out in the last 10 - 15 years though.

Home from home, Llew? Well it does have a fridge (beer, seeds & bulbs), freezer, microwave, tumble drier, kettle, etc, etc!!!!
Whilst the book does not have many of the specific species and varieties that we grow it does give enough general detail for immediate use. In the house we have a large library of specialist books and the internet to browse for more detail.

Ha, ha. Your shed sounds better kitted out than my house. :o)

That is what worries me, Llew. Not long ago we had a new bed delivered and it was stored in the shed for while before it moved into the house - I thought that I should be taking this as a hint ;-).

Ha, ha, ha. :o)

Father Christmas DOES exist! A man in a red van and wearing a red 't' shirt has just brought me a copy of the new encyclopedia :-0)
It is now in two volumes (which makes for easier lifting onto old knees) but as far as I can see from a quick glance the contents are pretty much the same as my old, trusty friend.
The older encyclopedia has now moved to its new home in the potting shed and I am forbiden from removing the new one from the house.

2 volumes? Hmmm, wonder if the books are a bit smaller than before then. Mind you, when I was looking at it on Amazon, it never said it was in two volumes..unless I missed it of course.
Still, the red van man came to me too, Bulba.. my Encyclopaedia of Gardening came. :o) Nice book and big too so I'll enjoy having a look through that later.
20 May, 2009
The original volume was 1080 pages and the total number of pages for the two new volumes is 1128 - so slightly larger overall.

Cor! a bit of a beasty then, eh? lol.
I may still treat myself sometime soon. (wink, wink).
Adding:
Actually, Bulba..I think I may have got your book confused with something else. I've just checked my amazon link in previous post and that book only has 744 pages, so you can't have that one. Have you a link to the one you have? or is it the A to Z that you have?

Llew, I am talking about the RHS A-Z Encyclopedia of Plants.
20 May, 2009
Oh, duh!!!! I thought so, lol.
I was talking about the Ency' of Plants and Flowers. :o)
Ooooh, it's all too confusing. I might stick to trial and error in furture, lol.
