how to look after a lavender tree

I would like to keep it in a pot, should it be a large pot to allow it to grow big or does it like to be contained more?

I would not say contained, if it is in a small pot the size will be restricted. Grow in moderately fertile well drained soil in full sun, and after flowering, prune it by trimming all the flower stalks off and keep in shape but do not cut into old wood.
