Does anyone know what this might be?
I found three of these whilst weeding a neglected part of the garden today.
My immediate thought was, bindweed, because I do have a lot of both field and hedge bindweed.
However, the root is not like any bindweed root that I have come across, yet. It doesn't have the same habit either. The stems and leaves are quite stiff and although it is trailing, it is not twining. The largest leaves are 3 - 4 cms long and the flowers are tiny.
Any ideas, anyone?

Thanks Mg.
I have googled the images. The flowers do look very similar, but the stems are growing out from the middle of a leaf which doesn't look the same shape...
...from the images I get.

Let's see what others suggest Karenfrance.

Yes, Mg...
...because the images I get, look nothing like the leaf I have, but maybe that might be "French" google?

It's not Claytonia .. I grow Claytonia perfoliata at the other garden I sometimes work in at Clayton Hall..I just like the play on words and the fact that clayton was part of the Manchester mining area and it's alternative name being Miners Lettuce As you say...
First thoughs are that it is Copse Bindweed

Karen.. Remember after you told me I was 'b1@@dy obsessed by weeds'
You told me you had every species of Dock? Well this is the dock family..I am sure it is Copse Bindweed Fallopia dumetorum. If not it is Black Bindweed.

i know it as black bryony and it is an annual chocking weed.
21 Jun, 2012
Tamus communis or black bryony is my thought. annual I think had it a couple of times but not lately.
21 Jun, 2012
I can see why SBG..but I think the leaf of black bryony less uniform and the veins more pronounced ?
Be nice to see the seed

I think it might be black bindweed Karen, 'Bilderdykia convolvulus'
You mentioning the 'black' word Seaburngirl, got me going there, we get it here too and i think - HOPE- it is an annual, without those dratted bindweed roots which go on forever....
21 Jun, 2012
Thanks everyone!
I've had a wee look through google images...and I think that it is indeed black bindweed, just my luck...
I think that I must be the keeper of the world fallopia/convolvulus collection...lol...:/

Phew another mystery solved - bring on the next one :-)
21 Jun, 2012
Well.. The only major difference between Copse Bindweed and Black bindweed is the seed, that is why I said it is one or the other.
Copse bindweed has very glossy black seeds. Black bindweed has matt black to dark brown seed. I wonder if I can persuade you to grow some to harvest Karen....Thought not ..Lol

I think it is Claytonia perfoliata, miner's lettuce, if so it can be eaten raw or cooked like spinach. Google images to check Karenfrance.
