Last winter I planted an avenue ( 30 trees) of prunus, bare root size 8/10 and 10/12. Most are fine and exhibit normal vigour but about 5 have developed very small leaves and seem in poor health. Any advice appreciated.

yes i'm inclined to think it is microclimate too. the soil might not be as deep where these plants are, or they get more wind/frost. perhaps frost nipped the leaf buds as they were forming? [dont know about your local weather conditions so frost might be totally out of the question.]
give them a general feed and afraid its wait and see.
just a daft thought you did take them out of their protective wrapping? only ask as my nephew helped plant some shrubs and then when i counted pots 3 were missing. no guesses s to where they were?

Could be all number of things, lack of water and nutrients but most likely those trees with poor looking leaves are putting down roots rather than opening leaves and will look much better next year.
