i have no leaves on my hamamelis

i planted a Hamamelis in my garden last year, it had lots of blooms and looked lovely, but now it looks very sad and has about 4 tiny leaves on it. Not sure if its dead or if its normal.

Doesn't sound good. Try the scratch test. Scrape a little bit of a branch with your nail to see if there is any green showing beneath the bark. If not, then I'm afraid that branch is dead.
There is some life if there a few leaves, however. If it were mine, I'd cut back those branches you find to be dead back to where there are signs of life.
