many thanks for all replies to my question, I will give it a lot of thought.
My next question is about dwarf beans. I recently planted 2 rows and they were doing fine until I looked at them today and found most of them are now just stalks and no leaves, the slugs have been here again. Q will they grow new leaves or do I have to start again.

So sorry but it has happened to all of us at some time. I'm afraid it's start again. If you plant seed quickly you may just get a late crop this year, assuming you mean french/runner type. If it is practical then keep a fine sprinkling of slug bait round them (don't overdo it) until they are big enough to fend for themselves.
