can I layer a standard dwarf lilac ?

England, United Kingdom

I have a dwarf lilac ( Potted ) and it has new growth at the base of the stem. If I push the tip of the new branch growth into the soil will it form roots so that I can separate it and create a new tree?

You may not want to! - depends whether it's grafted - if it's a standard, it may well be grafted and if the growth you're seeing is off the rootstock rather than the grafted standard, you'll probably end up with an enormous lilac tree, all of which produce loads of suckers. If it's grafted, you should be able to see a lumpy area, probably at the top of the standard stem. Over to you.
