i have hosta's growing in pots but need moving on, not sure if it would be ok to put them in the ground rather than re-pot, and if so when is the best time of year to do so.?

Agree with Anchorman. The one problem with the ground is that they are easier for slugs to get to. I keep mine in metal pots to keep them off them.

The best time of year is autumn or early spring but as long as you water them regularly until they're settled in you can do it any time when there's no frost in the ground.
