could a severe infestation of ladybirds have caused my pine trees to die

The aphids that the ladybirds have come to feed on could have caused your trees to die back. They are sap-sucking insects and do spread virus' and diseases. Maybe leave a clump of nettles in a corner of the garden for the ladybirds to breed on - then they will be on hand to control your aphids - before they kill anything else!!

They have fed on the aphids/greenfly that your trees have been infested with, they are the good guys (ladybirds) trying to help you out
