I scattered some lupin seeds in my garden and had no success with them. Then I read somewhere that lupin seeds have a very hard outer covering and they should be soaked in water for a couple of days...so I did that and then planted them in pots in the green house...now I have got loads of little lupin plants...but I will let them get a lot bigger so that slugs and snails donĀ“t eat them.

Rogi in the wild there is nothing to stratify the seeds - they simply take much longer to germinate.

Would it be autumn or spring if decided to just scatter them?

Autumn Kate when the seed is still fresh.

Happy to help Kate, you'll not know what colour they are going to be until they flower - that is part of the fun!

Well in the wild they simply scatter themselves, when the seed pod is ripe it bursts open and sends the pea like seeds off all over the place. That is fine if you don't mind where they grow but it is probably easier to collect the seed when the pods are dry and ripe and plant it where you want the lupins to grow, one seed to a hole. No real need to start in seed trays but you can do so if you are bothered by slugs, as they love lupin seedlings. Seed wont be ripe for a good month yet.
