It was green all through winter and I need to know whether it is a true evergreen. Do you think it could be Bergamot? Thanks

Sorry to answer your question with more questions, but how tall and wide is this plant?
26 May, 2009
It is about 2 ft tall and the heads are about 3 inches wide

Is the growth all soft, i.e., green, softish stems, or is there anything woody at the base?
26 May, 2009
Because Mageth's right, it could be Sweet William (Dianthus barbatus), if there's no woody growth

Definitely not Burgamot!

phew - looks like you are right - Dianthus. Never knew they grew so tall, cant wait for the full flower. Thanks x

Sweet Williams no doubt,, remember to collect the seeds from them when they go over and ripen and you will have a lovely display but it will be the year after next as they do take two years to come to maturity. I usually work the surface around the plant for some seeds to sow naturally then thin them out. they are lovely sown in clumps.
