Baffling Hosta problem

I bought a 'Fire & Ice' Hosta recently. It is potted and is on a bark chippings border with other potted Hosta's. It now has huge holes in the middle of leaves that are edged with a horrible brown colour. Have put slug pellets down but no sign of any slugs/snails. Moved it on to a table at night and same thing is happening. Wondering now if it's a vine weevil?

well it could be and itcould still be slugs. they are eating the centre out of lilies and dahlies but not the edges. Caught 2 of the blighters last night!

Crikes, can they climb up tables? Been out with the torch and can't find a thing & those new pellets I bought are bound to work, my sister tells me. Wondering what this ragged brown discolouration around the holes are?

They climb up every blessed thing! I often see them close up to the gutter on my back wall, and they climb up the glass back door and the French window. Sometimes I find moving the pots around deters them for a few days but they eventually catch up.

Yep, definately slugs.

I found the best thing is if you grow Hostas in pots, keep the pot in a very large drip tray and keep it filled with water. Hostas love the water, slugs generally won't. Make sure that no part of the plant or pot is touching anything else and make sure there's no slugs that have buried themselves into the soil.

I would agree slugs....my garden is flooded at the moment and I'm finding them escaping 'up' the shrubs now!!

Have you looked under the pot? Sometimes the little dears spend the day under there and come out at night. I reckon its a job for pellets. Then you can put a length of copper tape round the rim, which slugs will not cross, and as well cover the compost with sharp edged grit, which likewise they hate to cross.

Yes, checked under the pots - nothing. Been out there everynight with the torch. Put grit out last night with some egg shells. More big holes though!! Would have thought the pellets would have got them by now. My border is looking a real sight with all these deterents but needs must! Have even raked up the bark chippings that the pots are sitting on, that slugs aren't supposed to like

This has got me baffled, hence me thinking about maybe there was a weevil already in the plant when I bought it.

Shall now try that water idea Andy.

Just a thought Annalise.....have you checked right down inside the plant. Even the tiniest slug can get itself right down into the crown!

Weevils make irregular holes on the edges of the leaves not in the middle usually. Scottish is right, you'd be amazed what damage even a very tiny slug can make and they are so hard to find. I hope you solve it soon.

Do they now! - that's the Weevils ruled then.

Tipped the whole plant out of the pot & couldn't see anything. I guess a small one could make it's home in there, didn't think of that. At this rate I'll be breaking the whole plant up to find it - Lol

He will be there - you just need to find him!!!
He will be one of those tiny tiny beige coloured ones I'll bet!!!! :)

Couldn't you bring yourself to put a couple of the nasty slug pellets down really close to the plant? Desperate problems demand desperate remedies.

Well I did put down some of those blue pellets but nothing yet!!!
Can someone tell me if you get a brown discolouration round the outline of an opaque shaped hole before it actually becomes a hole (if you get my drift) with slugs.

Sounds quite snail-like. They sort of "lick" at the plant so that thick leaves get thinner and thinner until they just go into a hole. Not sure about the brown edge - that might depend on the leaf in question. It does sound a bit of a mystery if you haven't found anything. The snail could be lurking some way away.

Oh,that sounds about right Melchisdec! Don't laugh but can snails get up on garden tables too!!!! If so, must take them all night - Lol.

Thing is where ever I move this plant to. ie table, chair ground, same probs. Away to get the torch again!

Oh, I know, Annelise - they get everywhere. They are real mountaineers! OH just warned me to be careful because there was one near the hinges on the open French window, - in case I squashed it... OH YEAH??? (he ain't a gardener!)
