bareroot hosta + astible

Hereford, United Kingdom

Hi everyone, me again, right well i bought a hosta bareroot and two astilbe that were bare root the same time as my dahlia, ixia and a load of shrubs etc, well everything other than my hosta and astilbe seems to have come to life,i planted as told, soaked in tepid water etc but nothing showing yet

I found my astilbe to be quite a slow growing plant,
maybe this is how they are, if its growing from bare root you may not get anything until next year

Im sure someone on here will be able to help though

lol, oh well i found this with my foxgloves not realising at the time that it would take a year for me to see them, but im overjoyed with the result so will be with the astilbe to no doubt

they both need damp conditions to do really well. I've never heard of soaking them in tepid water before. It wasnt too hot was it?
If it was a small piece of root you may only get 2 or 3 leafy shoots this year [Astilbe]. Sad that they are not doing well for you. perhaps once they have settled they will both grown away.

I am sure Seaburngirl will agree with me but if I were you I would go to your local garden centres and look around, a pleasant afternoon can be spent without buying, and when you see something you like!! I have had very poor luck sending away for those bare rooted plants, I find 1 out of three will survive, that is why they are cheeper. and as far as perenials I am sure friends will give you pieces or seeds, it is great fun.

yes i agree Telme8. there are often some good buys out there. if browsing dont take your wallet out of the car or even your house:o)
the best bare root plants i've ever had were dicentra from Parkers. But so were the worst. so as said you pay your money and take the risk. In parkers defence though, they have replaced those that didnt survive for me and for free.

hi
it can be false economy to buy from dutch growers, or any growers that offer bare root stock as the items can suffer and stress while out of the ground, sometimes for days on end, so do as telme8 says and wander around your local GC a while..
