magellanica is not a variety in itself. it refers to hardy fuchsias, that are suitable as single bushes or as hedging, ie ricartonii , hawkshead, and mountain gold. they will all do well in most garden soils . a good layer of mulch ensures good growth and prevents frost damage to the roots in winter.

Fuchsia magellanica is one of the hardiest fuchsias in cultivation. It actually grows wild here in Cornwall. It is tolerant of a variety of soils and conditions but does require fairly free drainage. Soil ph should preferably be neutral but + or - 0.5 is ok.
If growing it in a container, it will be quite happy with a good quality multipurpose compost. Add some water retaining granules, and pinch back and feed regularly.
