Hello, I have a mature wisteria with several limbs coming off it. I've grown it over a pergola where the old wood is. I've encouraged it to grow in another direction and it is doing well, blossoms well for the last 2 years. The main limb is about 4 inches thick at the base growing over pergola, and the limb in the other direction is 1 inch.
Question: How do I discourage growth over pergola and encourage more growth in the other direction without harming it?
Your thoughts would be appreciated, many thanks, Andy.

« I'd be grateful if you could identify this plant for me. Thanks.
If you no longer want any growth over the pergola, the simplest solution is to cut off the 4 inch main stem, at an angle to allow rain to run off, as low down as you can - but not now. It's a bit late this year, but a good time to do it would be when the plant is dormant, in winter, or in spring.
