EM mud balls for ponds - do they work?

I recently noticed a gardening catalogue selling 'EM mud balls', which reputedly clear pond water of green algae and are safe for fish and other wildlife. Before investing in some, I wonder whether anyone has tried them and was it with any success?

What about barley straw? thats supposed to keep ponds clean. Think most garden centres that have aquatic areas will stock it. Not too expensive either.

never heard of them. with the right amount of plants the pond will clear naturally.
aim for about 2/3 of the surface covered with growth.
