bay leaf tree leaves turned brown

i planted a bayleaf tree in my garden about a year ago. since then the leaves have turned brown. i live in the north east of scotland

Is it still alive? Lots of causes of this if it is - wind burn, drought, excessive cold in its first year. More info please
