My hydrangea has never flowered. It is about 4ft accross and 3 ft high. It looks very healthy and has been in its present position for 12 years plus. I cut out all the dead wood each year.' Does it need water or a dry site? I have used ericaceous compost and acid feed.

When you say you 'cut all the dead wood each year', can I ask when you do that, as in what time of year - autumn or spring?
To answer the rest of your question, they prefer a shadier position (dappled shade is ideal) and a moist, rich soil which doesn't get waterlogged, so something that's been enriched with manure or similar, or mulched with humus rich material in spring.
