why do my courgettes only grow about 4in then start rotting ..do you pull off the large flower

It's due to the flower acting as a bowl, water sits in the flower as it fades and causes it to rot where it joins the fruit. Therefore the fruits rot too. as soon as the flower has closed carefully remove, you may find this helps to stop the rot from spreading back. but as Cammomile says, if you have rotten fruits, just remove and more will grow.

Our slugs and snails love the rotten fruits, little b's, but nice strong ones should grow as everyone has said, we have already eaten quite a few from ours.

This seems to be the norm. Take off the rotting courgettes and I guarantee you will get some decent ones soon.
