There's a variety called 'Voyage' which is supposed to be a tomato which travellers took with them on their ships. It forms a tomato consisting of a mass of smaller bumps and lumps rather like the excrescence in your photo, and the idea (reputedly) was that you just pulled one off the fruit when you wanted a piece of tomato.
I grew it last year and it was an interesting novelty, but it tasted horrible! You can get the seed from Graines Baumaux in France if anyone is interested!

I found one like this last year. they are great fun especially for the children.

How could you resist putting a black eye on it with a marker pen?
