Is it worth paying to sharpen the secatuers or should I simply but a new pair?

Not worth all the money and the hassle of paying for it to be done. Buy a new pair.

I just do as Bulba says, except I use an ordinary mill file--the smaller size. Remember not to grind the flat side of the blade, since part of the cutting action is from the tight fit between the blade and the hook. That also means that when you reassemble it, you will want to make it as tight as possible without imparing the action.
As for paying someone else to do it, I have yet to find anyone here that could do a good job of it. If it is a relatively inexpensive pair, and you feel uncomfortable with doing it yourself, it might be best to buy a new pair.

I keep mine sharpened with an old carving knife steel. I can't be bothered to take mine apart, especially as I have a pair of the cheaper variety of wolf and they are not that great. I am looking to buy a good pair that I will do an mot on probably monthly if not weekly.

It would also depend on the type of secateurs. Spare blades are available for most felco types.

I bought a gadget for a very small amount of money which sharpens knives, scissors and secateur blades very quickly and safely.

In mentioned on someone's blog about a month ago that I had had mine sharpened - they were good quality ones and well worth doing, cost was about £6 so a gadget sounds a good saving in the long term Owdboggy, did you have to dismantle them though as I would not fancy that?

No dismantling needed, one just wipes the sharpener along the blade a few times. Neither of us can remember where we bought it so cannot help with a make or a source. Monty whatisface had a device which he was using on one of the programmes. That was just an oil stone type thing on a stick. Those I have seen in various Garden Centres.
Cost a bit to pay for sharpening ours, there are 6 pairs on the hall window ledge to be picked up when one goes gardening and I am sure there are others in the Workshed.

Thanks Owdboggy.

I have a secateur grave trellis thingy, where I hang all the old pairs that are no longer any good. It serves to remind me what not to buy. Not helpful just useless info on my part. :-)

I misused mine 2ndhand lol, but now I have a really good pair I find I take more care with them.

Why not sharpen them yourself, Mtm. Carefully remove the screw from the centre of the secatuers and remember how it all came appart. Then simply sharpen the cutting blade on a slip or oil stone and put them back together again.
