Growing ginger lilies

Mr Fothergill produced some rhizomes this year, three ensente ventricosum ( supposedly high scented tropical plants of the ginger family) which arrived on 1st April. I planted them as suggested by my local rare bulb nursery in a large pot of rich compost just below soil level and have kept them warm and moist. Only now are two of them just beginning to show a bud. The season's getting on -- Does anyone know whether they will get away and flower this year?

i think what you have there is the abysinnian bannana, i have just purchased these myself for my garden centre to sell, and yes they should flower for you too.

They should flower this year if you give them a feed and keep them in a sunny sheltered spot. I have grown Hedychiums (Ginger lillies) for years and the flower appears on the growth that appears in that year. They usually do better when they are pot bound, but will need to be split every 2 - 3 years to remove the dead growth. Gingers I have grown in the past haven't flowered until late September early October. I would bring the variety you have indoors in the Winter.

I don't know, been wanting to try growing gingers for a while, would love to hear if they do flower this year. I guess if we have a long, hot summer, that would increase the chances.
