I've just bought 100 different alliums from a T&M offer.
Before planting thought I'd better ask if it's best to plant in the ground( which can get wet, wouldn't like them to rot) or plant them in pots then transfer them in spring.
Thanks

How wet is wet? They will need some moisture over winter. Light soil that drains well is fine.

I planted 80 in the ground yesterday and remember being told on here sometime ago to place them on a bit of grit as some do not like cold, exposed or waterlogged conditions, although smaller growing species like cooler, moister conditions such as the Allium cyathophorum var farreri and Allium Moly, which can do well in scree beds.

Make sure there are no Allium Cowanei among them. I would think T&M would not include any of these tiny thugs in their offering. They are still however on offer on mail order sites, I checked recently.

Why, what do Allium Cowanei do?!

Thanks guys. Here is what I've got
Allium ostrowskianum ( read where this spreads rapidly, do I need to be careful with this)
Allium moly
Allium sphaerocephalon
Allium carry rum
Allium ‘Purple Sensation’

Drc I always end up not happy with where I've planted alliums as I don't seem to cover the base. Is it possible for you to send a couple of photos where you've planted yours.
Many thanks as always for your help.

I have all of these except Allium 'carry rum' which I dont know at all? But then I got to thinking! carry rum - caeruleum? I have a pretty blue one called A caeruleum 'Blue drumstick' and think you may mean one of those?
I presently grow 10 different ones and adore them, I just plant them anywhere. If you go to the first page of my garden plants there are pictures of them. If I had a fav it would be Allium Christophii they have huge flower heads which go on forever.

Take over your garden lubeelu if they find it congenial and you have been ill or out of action at the right moment for the takeover. They start shooting now. they have already seeded if you let them, produced about 20 bulbs from one. The leaves steadily grow to about 18 inches long and swamp stuff near to. They get in the base of shrubs. They shoot from fragmented bulbs too. The flower is tiny and semi hidden in its foliage. The one thing they don't do is burrow deep when they clump. I am currently ridding a raised circle of the tiny demons. I let them come up and hunt them down. The circle just has pots of Heuchera standing on, until clear. They don't mind shade either. See my blog pictures.

A. ostrowskianum is as big a thug as Ground elder or Bindweed. They spread, spread and spread again. Should be on the banned list like Knotweed.

That is not what I find Owdboggy.

Not all alliums are thugs.....thankgoodness.

True. Try getting A. plummerae or A wallichii to spread even by seed. But I have a patch of A ostrowskianum which has been treated with weedkiller for the last 10 years and there are still thousands of them coming up.
