I decided to write something on My Profile and find that flowers seem to be the main item. The problem I have is that I am a dyed in the wool veg’ gardener and spend a great deal of time on my allotment where I grow plants to save money over winter.I mean how can any vegetable shop justify two pounds plus for a cabbage? I love gardening and only wish I had joined an allotment many years ago.Every year I grow a plant I have not bothered with before or one from seeds from the Seed Library. Its a learning curve and in its own way just a little exciting to watch something new grow.Anyway, thanks forlisteningMay the force of creation be with you all.

I have been a veggie gardener all my life and have only recentley got into the flower side which is nearly as rewarding. Have you ever grown an 'asparagus pea' if so did you find it worthwhile?

I wish I could grow more veg Quinta. Not much room. Used to in a much larger garden. Fresh veg taste lovely. Good for you too. Still grow fruit on dwarf trees, blackberries, Jostaberry, chives, grapes. Slugs and snails would feast if I grew Broccoli or Lettuce as I used to. I could grow Sweet Corn I suppose. Too old for an allotment. Welcome to GOY

I find your comments interesting Quinta1. Like many I only grow veg in summer and find it too difficult to grow in winter. One of my excuses is that my soil is sticky clay, some other excuses are the cold, the wind and space. I've always had a desire to become self sufficient but I only have a small plot. I admire you having a go at something new each year. Welcome to GoY.

hi i understand your dilemma, i have flowers front garden and veg at the back. if i am doing something in the front it takes days as i go from one must do to the next, then i remember the back garden and repeat the same round with the veg. i often ask myself if i had to give up one of the gardens which would it be? i still have not resolved that one yet. all i can suggest for you is to keep going as you already are, just keep adding a flower or two, just go with the flow. happy gardening. i could use some tips on growing cauliflowers.

I would love to grow veg, but I only have room for all the many flowers I love to grow :))

Welcome Quinta1....growing veg is just as much a part of gardening as flowers, more tricky I would have thought!....I've always bemoaned not having enough room for veg so I have my name down for an allotment. I am now top of the list and hope to be allocated one by the end of the year (which is not far away!)....I wonder when one is "too old" to get one?....My son just told me yesterday that I was!!!!....I go by the adage.......rathe to have tried and failed than not to have tried at all.......or maybe I'm just stubborn :))))))

Thank you all so very much for your very kind and interesting remarks.Thank you also for welcoming me to GOY. I know exactly what you mean by youngsters in the family telling you that you are too old and past it.You are as old as you feel.I admit, sometimes I look at the weather and think of the long trek up the hill (my plot is Number thirty eight from the bottom which is right on the crown) and yes, sometimes I ache so much I can hardly face the walk home, but here lies a moral, which might help you see you are not too old.Since 1994 I have been in Renal Failure and had to attend dialisis three times a week, four hours a time. Then in October 2008 I had a transplant and here is where it can mean you.The Consultants remarks were as follows;''I always know when I have a gardener because all that digging and raking makes my job a lot easier and your recovery takes only half as long.'' You are gardeners, the cream of the earth. You are creative and have a empathy with nature. You bring life from the soil and your work is a pleasure to behold.Never can we be too old.Now after my lecture;sorry I get carried away,I will make you smile.I cringe when I have to dig weeds up because as I see it,a weed is another persons flower.I changed my plot last year because I wanted a bigger one and I'll bet not one of you is older than me.Of course it gave me aches and pains as I dug out swathes of couch grass, wild black currants bushes and vicious tentacles from the same plant and not forgetting the dreaded Bind Weed (ugh). But I will just be a little slower when digging my trenches.Come on dive in,your only this age once...You are all, everyone of you Creationists.Just bear in mind that if your gardens lay fallow and unloved, all those creatures from the lowest tick to the beautiful butterfly and the song of the Thrush,Blackbird and YellowHammer to name but a few would in the end cease to exist....Now I'm going for a sleep hahaha.
