sweet peas

I bought three packets of seeds in Asda for £4 last Tuesday when we went shopping. They were great value as one was a large packet of sweet peas that contained six separate packets and that on its own was £3.99. There was one variety in there that was different to that mentioned on the outside so I informed Johnson’s about it:-

Someone was talking about sweet peas Balcony that's how I thought of them. I went out and bought some and planted them up today. I didn't know you had an allotment Balcony-I have my name down for one and I am fourth on the waiting list :-)

Yes it should look good Sandra -the only problem is where to put them. I will probably put them in some pots and grow them up a bamboo wigwam type frame. :-)

I was much too late planting them last year Sandra so I will not be doing the same thing again. Someone told me to soak the seeds before planting them does anyone else do that or do you plant them without soaking first?
I am looking forward to some fragrance in the garden this year Hywel instead of the wonderful aroma of the pig farm about half a mile away which wafts around our village about once a month in the summer when the winds blows in a certain direction:-)

I usually soak the seeds Richard . I've read it softens the skin and that makes it easier for germination.
I think I'd rather smell sweet peas than a pig farm - Ugh ! lol

Thanks Hywel I will plant some more sweet peas tomorrow just to be sure, and will soak them in a glass overnight. :-)

I've also read that if you chip away a tiny bit of the seed coat, near the "eye" it also helps water enter easier & speeds germination. Some say to use a nail file to rub a little of the seed coat away. Others don't bother to give them any special treatment & sow them right away. I've used several of the methods but not ever having make any sort of record or taken any note I've no idea if it makes that much difference!

Thanks for that Balcony. I seem to remember reading something like that but forgotten all about it until you mentioned it.
I have planted them now but may try that method when I grow later ones this year. :-)

You did very well there, Richard! A real bargain! I don't have any Sweet peas this year. Last year I grew some over the winter in toilet tubes & then planted them out on my balcony. Had a wonderful display. I may get a few packets to plant on the allotment but there are more pressing things to be getting on with on it!
Wish you great success with them. They used to be my late Mum's favourite flower. My dad grew them in London when I was only a boy just for her!
