Hippeastrums
10 comments
I have just stepped in to the fascinating world of Hippeastrums. For 11 years I have had Hippeastrum Johnsonii growing on the south side of my house. I have always liked those flowers, but never really took the time to care for them or to inquire about what they really were. This past year, i took an interest in them and have found out that there are many other species of this same flower and tons of hybrids.
Today, I have over 20 of the hybrids and I am wanting to have one of each one, lol!! I am sure that will be an impossible task because there are over 600 hybrids.
My Johnsonii flowers have finished their blooming phase and I am seeing a few seed pods beginning to form. I hope to collect some seeds and watch them grow for 4 years before blossoming into beautiful new flowers!!

Thanks Sandra, I've been along but haven't left a comment. I was very interested in seeing your plants! It appears that you grow them in very big pots & quite deep at that! I find that 15cm (6 inch) pots are perfectly suitable & they look more in proportion with the plant. I put the bulb very high in the pot & generally there is sufficient weight to stop the flower head pulling the plant pot over.

Balcony,
Thanks...they are gallon size pots....the newest ones i ordered were just a bit bigger than my other pots....I try to keep the bulbs pretty high as well.....I am thinking about trying some out in vases...with the bulb on top of rocks....just to see how it turns out.....can i get the link to beyond space....i seemed to have lost it.
Thanks,
sandra :)

The very last bulb of my Amaryllis is now ending its flowering. ;-( No more now till next year unless one of a few that haven't flowered decide to flower during the summer - as happened with a few last year.

Welcome to Goy San! I hope you will enjoy our friendly site!
It must be fantastic to grow these beauties outside, San! They are a bit more exotic over here, mostly bought as pressies for Christmas! It's lovely that you have discovered a plant that you find so all consuming and interesting! Fascinating!! Good luck with your Johnsonii seeds, I hope they germinate for you and are all you wished for!
