scottish summer

This is my first ever blog so I hope you all find it interesting. After living in a flat for nearly 4 years I had enough of growing everything in pots, even though they looked fantastic. Despite what people say about being able to grow anything in a pot as long as you feed and water it, some plants just aren’t happy and need to be in the ground.
Now I live in a house with a lovely big garden. I’ve put a lot of work (and money) into it and the results after one year are amazing.
The only problem I now have is our typical Scottish weather – my potatoes have been ready for three weeks but I haven’t been able to dig them up because of the weather (I had my heating on yesterday – it’s August..). Everything is soaking and even my solar lights are failing after one hour as there hasn’t been enough daylight to charge them (the garden gets full sun nearly all day).
Oh well.

You have a nice garden Str and I can understand your frustration at the weather, especially as you waited all that time for your garden, done all that work and cannot sit out and enjoy for a while or as you said get your potatoes lifted, guess you better get your wellies out, lol.. Welcome to Goy, I have enjoyed your first blog...

I like your garden. It looks as though you have a lot going on. I know what the weather in Scotland it like and can testify to how cold and damp it can be in August. Amazing variation in our small country.

Know what you mean about our Scottish weather. Had to tie in all my tall plants at the allotment tonight as it was so windy. Some of my flowers haven't even bloomed yet and it feels like autumn is just round the corner. As long as we don't get an early heavy snow fall like last year.

Thanks everyone for your lovely comments. I finally got my potatoes out of the ground, we had a dry day on Tuesday! I got 9 whole potatoes.... I had a much better, earlier batch grown in a bag - same type, all planted on the same day. I think next year I won't bother planting them in the ground, certainly for my garden it seems to be a waste of time. Anyway, I've dug the ground over to make a tiny pond now!
I thought seeing as that patch of ground doesn't get a massive amount of sun, it probably won't be very productive so why not make a wildlife pond? Its only about 1.5m by 1m but it will be enough to encourage frogs and such like. Any advice welcome!
