Much better than being at work!

Am on leave from work this week so have taken the opportunity to get out into the garden – finally!! Its wonderful to walk around and see new life emerging everywhere. We are planning 2 new projects for the garden this year, one is to finally create our woodland area, which we have talked about for the last few years. We have already started on this…………………..
This is what it looked like back in autumn.
For christmas my brother bought us a new arch for this area which has a gate attached. Here’s hubby trying to put it all together. And he’s done it!!!
next we had to plant the hedging
this is inside the woodland area. i have just received my primulas and geraniums which are all to go in here, along with some ferns.
a good afternoons work!
And now we have decided – partly inspired by members gardens seen on this site and partly by Carol Kleins’ garden at Glebe Cottage (i am something of a Carol fan), to radically change the back garden so instead of having a more formal look as we do now, we are going to introduce big sweeping curves all for planting, with just a small area of grass left to wind its way inbetween the beds.
I marked the area out with string yesterday and tomorrow – weather permitting – we are going to start digging. I cant wait!! watch this space!!!!!
We’ve also been to a few of the garden centres over the past few days, and have picked up some real bargains. We got 5 plants worth £80 from a clearance section, and paid only £40 and today we were gobsmacked when we came across the biggest skimmia i’ve ever seen at a garden centre, reduced to £9.99!!! we both looked at the price tag expecting it to say £30 or so, especially when there was a tiny one next to it for sale at £4.99. No idea why this was reduced so much. The plant is lovely and bushy with no sign of disease. Its now proudly sat in our courtyard area until the new beds are ready and then we can decide where it will look best.
this pic doesnt really do it justice. trust me, this is big……
so all in all a good few days, role on tomorrow…….

Well done - you'll soon be there with your woodland area, especially when the hedging grows so hopefully by this time next year you will have a lovely secluded area where you can sit and relax.

i saw that arch in another members garden last week, when your woodland area is established it will transform that part of the garden, it will be interesting to see the changes you make.
Think you got some bargains there, especially the size of that Skimmia at that price....

thanks everyone. Teds, it hadnt occured to me to use a hosepipe for marking out - doh! As it happens though, the string seems to have worked ok. I'm certainly enjoying making the changes to the garden, although right at this moment i am also suffering from making those changes, in the form of an aching back and stiff joints!! (been out digging for 6 hours today on phase 2!!). We have dug out one half of the garden and are off to the GC tomorrow to buy what we can to fill it. The idea is to concentrate on evergreens, with the gaps then filled with tall annuals like cosmos and perenials like poppy's, dahlias, heliums etc. Digging out the second half will be done in a few weeks, when we have enough money again to plant that section. Its all very exciting. And i cant wait to see the woodland area this time next year, it should look really different. I'll post more pics when things look less like a building site! Thanks for all your lovely comments.

You're making major changes in your garden, Tilly and they all sound lovely. A woodland area will be a welcome place to relax and the new arch/gate will be perfect.
You really got some great bargains...hope on your return for the second stage of your plan that you find lots more!

Its such fun making a garden from scratch, I loved making mine and its a on going job. I used a hosepipe to mark out our curved beds. Its much easier than sting as you can use a moon tool against the edge of the hosepipe to cut out the shape.
