Hebe's
14 comments
I am excited as my two hebe heartbreakers were delivered today, I just hope they grow as good as the pictures I have seen. I’m not sure how to look after them so any advice would be good.
I am amazed at the things still in the garden at this time of year what a bonus to be able to do work and the sun is shining and still feels warm.

Hi Trudy - I've got a Hebe 'Heartbreaker' and it is a really lovely one - it changes colour with the seasons!
And yes, I've still got Penstemons in flower. I've stopped dead-heading, now.

Hello Spritzhenry,
Have you any tips how to look after my "Heartbreaker"?

I don't do anything to it, Trudy! It seems to be doing OK by itself... I do normally mulch all my flowerbeds at this time of year with home-made compost - maybe that helps?

And this year Spritz has had extra help with mulching from a whole herd of cows. Should result in a plethora of Penstemon plants in the borders. :o)

Oh what a lucky boy Henry is:)))))
Thanks Spritz I will remember to mulch next year.

There's still time now - I haven't finished mulching yet! Where did you get them from, Trudy?
It was lucky for my garden that Henry was indoors - if he had chased them and panicked them, heaven knows what damage there would have been! He was watching from the Garden room in great excitement, itching to be outside playing with them!

I bought them from the Parker's catalogue Spritz. Not sure they are big enough yet to do much with.
How old is Henry? He looks lovely.

He's four, Trudy. He IS a lovely dog - very affectionate and usually obedient.
So are your hebes tucked up in the greenhouse for the winter?

Oh no Sprtiz, I don't have a greenhouse.
Sould I bring them indoors?
Off to bed now, hope you all have sweet dreams

I hope your hebes do well Trudy. Will you show photos of them after they've grown ?

Thank you Blodyn. Yes, photo's will be taken.

They might need some fleece on frosty nights, if they are real babies, Trudy. They are hardy, but if they have been in a greenhouse at Parkers, they may not have been grown 'hard', So I would cosset them a bit in very cold weather.

I just walked outside to put the wheelie bin in place for tomorrow's dustcart and I noticed a Penstemon Heavenly Blue is still soldiering on with a few pretty flowers. Refusing to admit that winter is near :o)
I hope your new plants turn out well. Some types of Penstemon seem less robust than others and this also seems to apply to hebes. I have several still in full bloom.
Please keep us up to date with progress :o)
