Heads up on a cold spell

OK, not really a ‘heads up’ as most of the media is picking up on this now. For the past few days it has looked like much of Europe is going to be gripped by a coldwave quite soon. The continent is looking at daytime temperatures several degrees below freezing and nighttime temperatures more than ten degrees below freezing, starting from around Monday 14th December. It now seems quite likely that we (in the UK) will be influenced by some of this cold air, but probably not the worst of it. However we could see sharp frosts (more than 5 degrees below zero in places) and daytime temperatures not much above freezing. This sort of prolonged cold can damage some of the more sensitive plants we are now growing in the British Isles, so this is just to give you a few days to cover them up, or do your very best, to avoid any losses. As for snow, well if you live in the north and east (right down to East Anglia, perhaps even Kent) then there is an increasing risk as we go through next week. Sorry to be the bringer of bad news :( I’ve written this quickly so apologies for any spelling or grammar errors.

10 Dec, 2009

well global warming or not, I guess this is winter in Britain and cold weather happens from time to time. I will update later after the next run of weather models is through :)

I think the garden will benefit from a cold spell, its far too warm and wet at the moment. Last years cold winter gave me the best Spring flowers i`ve had for years.

Thats certainly true Sandra, the native plants (or more hardy ones!) need the cold as part of their annual cycle, but many of us have those plants which survive slight frosts (ie no lower than -5c) and when anything that cold is (or might be) around the corner its worth just paying a bit of extra attention! Not sure my little heater in the g/h will be much use if it does get really cold.

I read this in the paper - and decided to make sure I have plenty of fleece around ready! I'm not sure we are getting as chilly weather here in the SW as the east and north, though - do you think?

I agree, I think the coldest weather might be in the SE but these things need watching. If anything the risk of something really cold (ie frosts lasting through the day aswell as nights) is decreasing, which is good news.:)

Do please let us know - that would be very helpful! Thanks. :-)))

I've been waiting for something wintery to happen here! Yesterday we went into our little town for shopping and the display over two farmacias stated the temperature to be 14 degrees. It was sunny, warm and very pleasant to be strolling around. My Dad always used to say "We'll pay for it later!" So we'll cover ourselves in goosegrease and sew ourselves into our longjohns as soon as it starts! Meanwhile .... it's lovely!

It was a HORRIBLE day today - I just couldn't get warm! Just like yours, Pam, only 2 -3 degrees - but nasty freezing fog to cope with! :-(

and the cold spell isn't even here yet : - (

No, I know - and more of the same is forecast, I'm afraid.

It was very scary to drive through today. :-(((

Oh I hope not !! I hate the cold. I preffer rain :o)) I always preffer rain to cold

12 Dec, 2009

This is still worth watching, some really cold air over Europe by Thursday/Friday and indications that the wind will be swinging round and coming from that way by then. Before that they'll be a 'warmish' northerly!

12 Dec, 2009

my garden is open to the north and east i really dislike weather from those directions! its always the worst weather Brrrrrrr

12 Dec, 2009

Well it hasn't been that cold here yet but some parts have been below -10c. In my town location I got down to -4 and I'm afraid to say the heater in the g/h was no good as it got down to -3 in there too. Banana plant looks dead (but I have heard they sometimes come back in the spring) and my osteospermum cuttings are looking frail. Oh dear :( Nice sprinkling of snow for the festive season on the other hand....
