Summer is officially here saw my favourite birds today a small mob of them 19/05/2014 I’m talking about the fantastic swifts, can any other bird be an example of good to be alive ,as they climb to great heights with their distinguishing calls to each other, they seem to be full of joy at arriving at a destination for our summer. Does any other bird make you feel as happy as the swifts do to me. I was born in August and I swear the call of the nesting swifts in the house where I was born were the first sounds I heard as a baby.

Robins do it for me as there always seems to be one while I garden and Blue tits remind me of cold winters and frozen milk on the doorstep with the cream at the top stolen by these small birds.

I have to say, I always feel Summer has arrived when the swallows turn up - but maybe they're swifts! At the moment it's the blackbird and sparrow families giving us joy in our garden.

What a difference birds make to our lives. I tend to think swifts as more an urban bird and swallows more countryside dwellers. Locally we had a nest of house martins that repaired and returned to the same nest year after year but sadly I have not seen them for years. There is a lot of activity with all the birds in the garden keep on feeding them as while they are looking after their young they need a lot of sustenance .

They do, Pop. My Mum's got blue-tits nesting in a box on the garage wall and the parents are in and out every 5 minutes with food. So lovely to watch them. Love waking to the dawn chorus too, just wonderful.

As to the difference between Swallows and Swifts.
A countryman once said to me "When you see them
dancing about in the sky, they are Swifts."
