Kazakhstan Revisited (6) - Eremurus

I wanted to put eremurus in their own blog as we saw several different ones, and they are such unusual plants.
If you’ve ever tried to grow them, you know their roots look like a starfish, with the growing bud in the centre. They need sun and good drainage, and do not like to be crowded by other plants in a border.
One of the endemics we saw was eremurus altaicus
Closer inspection of the flowers is also worthwhile
Eremurus robustus is well named. This flower spike was about eight feet high
I saw eremurus regellii, with its brown flowers, on my previous trip
And again in close-up
Nearby was eremurus fuscus
And there were also hybrids between the two species
Finally, another endemic, eremurus tianschanica
And in close-up
To be continued

Did very well last year with ours, it could well be this year, ours were crowded out, the border has been densely planted.... because the one all by itself flowered, ummmmm!!
