Livy learns to garden

I’ve been passionate about gardens for a long time. Passionate in that a good garden lifts my spirit like nothing else. But I have spent years dabbling, not knowing. Now the proud owner of a very wild allotment and equally wild largish London garden, I’ve enrolled a Garden Design Course and have made it my purpose in life to learn to garden! I mean properly learn. I want Latin plant names to slip off my tongue and I want to live and breathe gardens, every inch of them. This blog will chart some of my journey.

Hi Livy good luck on the course, I enrolled on a garden design course a few years ago. I was living in rented accom at the time so I was limited as to what i could grow plant etc. Now we have our own garden (it is 2 years old this May) When we moved here it was just lawn. have a look and see what a garden design course has taught me. Let me know what you think.
Good luck on the Latin names. As I sit here on this site i have a couple of books open when someone puts up a pic of plant I have not heard of I have a quick look.
Good luck.

You will learn most about gardening by getting out there during the daylight hours and reading about other gardener's exploits at night. Take whatever is written on a plant label with a HUGE pinch of salt and go and see how I created my garden (Winsford walled garden) with 3000 varieties in less than nine years via the web. It's also open daily to the public now.

Livy - I posted a blog a few weeks back about how plants are named. You might like to check it out and impress your tutor with your knowledge. As for Latin plant names, you probably know more than you think you do already - narcissus, hydrangea, rhododendron, chrysanthemum, forsythia, fuchsia... Learn one a week and that's another 50 in a year. Good luck, Andrewr
