More round the back.

At the top of the garden there is a huge Monkey Puzzle tree. Between it and the fence was a bed with nothing in it except a hug, flat topped Pieris. It did not even have the grace to flower or have nice colourful new leaves. It had to come out.

Between the Monkey Puzzle and the Pieris bed was a small empty bed. I dug it over and added compost. We think it was used for bedding out plants.

I began by cutting back the shrub to the main stem.

In fact it was not one shrub, but rather it had self layered and had lots of rooted stems.

Hard to see but there is a huge old flat topped stump in the other bed.

We decided that one big bed would be better than two small ones

Removing the turf.

This gives a good indication of the curved shape we created.

The ‘grass’ round the bed was not in the best of condition, but I can deal with that later.

Digging was complicated by the number of big roots from the stump. The soil was actually quite soft with years of Pieris leaves in it.

The stump is ver visible in this one. It was far too big to attempt to remove it.

We planted a few shrubs. There is a small Magnolia at the back and we positioned a prostrate Ceanothus to cover the stump. More plants will be added as we go along and acquire them.
