SUNDAY 20 APRIL

Very cold today so thought I would do something quite physical to warm up. So I worked on one half of my grasses/ferns border.
I dug everything up so that I could give the soil a good working over as it is very heavy clay with poor drainage. I turned the soil, bashed all the huge lumps to smaller ones & worked in some compost. Then re-positioned my grasses, some of which I divided.
So they are ready to get going now. I will fill the space with Astilbes, hostas & a fern or two, all of which are growing nicely in the polyhouse. Got the other side to do next.

Are they slices of tree trunks making the stepping stones? Your border is so neat now! Should look lovely in the summer... :-)

That's a LOT of effort and it shows. Well done!!
One thing you might consider...... astilbes, ferns and hostas do like moisture around their roots, even during a cold wet winter, whereas ornamental grasses are not so keen on the same conditions and would prefer improved drainage.
