First kitchen Garden!

Well, hi. I’m Anni, I’m 20, mother of an 8 month old son, and just moved into the first house with a garden. My family’s always been country folk, and gardening’s an important part of my family culture, I suppose you could say, but until recently I’ve never really had any desire to try it myself. That’s changed now!

So, I’ve been gifted a load of seeds and seedlings from a friend of the family, and I’m in the process of planning the garden. I have the seedlings for some strawberries (Temptation), hanging basket tomatoes (Tumbling Tom), yellow sweet peppers, basil, and I have sown some leek seeds indoors and planted out some well-established rasberry bushes a friend has grown and cut down last season.

So I guess I’ll keep y’all updated on how it goes. Not that I think anyone will read it; I’m just a stickler for keeping journals for this sort of thing.

Hi Anni! Welcome to GOY. Glad you've joined us and we'll be interested to see how things go in your first garden. Congratulations on that - you must be thrilled! Are you going to grow flowers as well? I don't grow veggies except tomatoes and cucumbers in the greenhouse, because I love having flowers and colour around me.

However, there are plenty of members who can advise you if you run into any problems with your home-grown food supply! LOL.

Of course we'll read it! Even better if you can add photos...

Awww, there is someone reading! Awesome! Sorry, I'm really giddy/excited; I'm REALLY into this garden. I only ever tried growing sunflowers when I was little and killed them, hence not trying again since, but I'm having luck at the moment, and I'm really happy!

I'm growing both; I'll be having mostly vegetables, but I'll have a flower-bed along the house on both sides, loads of pot-plants in the house, and there's a lot of flowers which can help your vegetables grow or create fertile soil when they die, so I'll be growing a bit of everything. Herbs too, and hopefully a Morello Cherry tree (little one against the house) next year.

So are you into companion planting, Anni? I know that french marigolds grown in the greenhouse by my tomato plants help to keep whitefly away.

(I hate the smell of them, so maybe the whitefly do as well!) LOL
