Lovely Rain and Lots Of Birds

It was an indoors type of day today … indoors with the air-con on!

We had glorious rain overnight, around 50 mm, and then throughout the day today we had intermittent light showers, which the garden loved. It’s a sure sign that this year’s lengthy dry season is over, thank goodness.

While the rain was very much appreciated, the accompanying heat and humidity was not! Just stepping outdoors to place some potted Bird’s Nest Ferns into ceramic pots for the courtyard garden was enough of a job. After a few moments I felt as though I’d just stepped out of the shower. Sweaty!!!!

While I was pottering around, there was a whole lot of noise from a group of around twenty Red-Tailed Black Cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus banksii) feasting on the blooms of our neighbour’s trees.

Apparently a group of cockatoos is called a ‘cackle’ and that seems appropriate.

I also noticed two Yellow Sunbirds out in the shrubs of the front garden bed.

One was having a preening session and ended up in all sorts of odd positions,

and could put a contortionist to shame!

The other was feasting on the nectar of the Russelia flowers.

I'm glad you enjoyed the rain, I love it, and we get plenty here in Wales (but most people moan about it)
I'm sure your garden is grateful for it too ...
However I can't look at birds, they make my skin crawl - ornithophobia :(

Hywel, rain is regarded as a precious resource in most areas of Australia, especially in the dry tropics where we don't experience rain for anything up to nine months of the year.

The only time you'll hear us complaining about rain is during a monsoonal wet season when we get massive amounts of rainfall in a very short period of time, which often leads to serious flooding in some suburbs.

Otherwise, we get as excited as small children receiving their Xmas presents whenever we hear raindrops on the roof!!

I'm sorry that my posts contain so many photos of birds. That must be a bit too much for you.

I’m glad you’re receiving rain! Here in Southern California we know how much the rain is needed. We haven’t had any rain in San Diego this season. It’s very dry and I’m watering almost every day.

The birds are gorgeous! Russelia is a plant that’s widely used here, the hummingbirds love it!

lovely blog as usual. I love collective nouns for groups of things. We have a charm of goldfinches and a murder of crows. The list is so interesting.

I also like rain when we haven't had it for a long while but this year we have had quite a dull year so the grey sky is the downer really.

Seaburngirl, I loved teaching collective nouns when I was a primary school teacher. The students just loved the wackiness of some of them! It's a fascinating thing.

I hope those grey skies turn into rainy ones soon.
