Autumn Prep.

So after coming home after an 8 hour day’s work, it was very refreshing to find the weather was fairly mild. I’ve wanted to make a new ‘bed’. So I decided to put my collection of cardboard down on the soil and cover with stones (to stop it from blowing away) Ive read that this is good for killing the weeds, and has to be left for a few months. This will be fine, as the dark nights are a challange during the week because it’s usually dark by the time I get home from work weeknights. Half an hour later I was quite pleased with my efforts.
Walking accross the (wannabe) lawn though got me thinking, “if I dont do it now I’m going to be too late”. So out came the fork, and the aerating started. I then struggled with the sand bought specially for the job and still waiting in a corner, together with some compost and loam. My husband saw me struggling with the heavy sand and came to my rescue. Under instruction he mixed together the quanties 3/3/1. Once mixed he then threw this on the lawn and I raked it in. Bare patches of lawn were then reseeded. It was going dark by the time we finished. We were absolutley shattered by the time we came it, in the dark. When we got up the following morning the newley top dressed and reseeded lawn was covered in fallen leaves. So now comes the clearing up job for the next few weeks, another challenge not to compact the lawn…. Phew!! If this doesn’t work by next spring it will all have to be lifted and turf laid. Fingers crossed.
