Just thought I would mention

Following Ruth Goodman’s advice (‘Victorian Farm’ programmes) I spread old soot around my Roses this year.
Also planted two Tansy plants, as advised by another
gardener.
I havent had any trouble with Greenfly at all.

Its a good idea to watch out for Tansy plants growing in the wild. Then early September, go back and pick off a few stems with the seeds, to grow for next year.

They look really nice among the Roses, and certainly do a good job, saving money on chemical sprays.

Also a plant of Lemon Balm in a large pot sunk into the ground by my Runner Beans. Result : no Blackfly, and none of the flowers were knocked off by birds taking them, I didnt have to spray with diluted Dettol, as I had done for 30 years. I picked Runner Beans July 12th – the earliest yet.

Thankyou Diane, I already grow lavender near my roses as the greenfly don`t like that but I do have a shrub that gets covered in blackfly every year, I have a huge lemon balm so I`ll split it and try it near my shrub...

It's really useful to know all this. I am always on the lookout for ways to beat the pests. I grow tagetes in my greenhouse and have had no whitefly in there now since I started. I'm interested in the lemon balm idea. Thanks.

Yes I have marigolds in my greenhouses as well, I no longer get red spidermite or whitefly and never use sprays....
