Life in plant roots.

Keep hoping plants condemned to the bin after the freezing winter will fight their way through to spring.
I covered my Hardy Plants with fleece in the cold greenhouse.
Saponaria (Soapwort) has looked dead for weeks. Just pulled it out of the pot to put into the wheelie bin, shook the compost off, and there on the roots were two little shoots about one third of an inch long.
Yippee !
Carefully returned it to its pot with some new compost and many apologies. Put onto the greenhouse staging, where it can grow again.

Great news about your saponaria Diane. I know fuchsias can be very slow to regrow in the spring. It's a good idea to keep them until the end of June, because they can regrow from the root when the stems seem totally dead. I had one once that didn't sprout a new shoot until July. I forgot to throw it, and was glad when I found it :o)

Today I had another look at a Red Grass I paid £10 for last autumn at our GC. It has seemed totally dead for weeks. Cursed because the price ticket was still stuck on the pot !
Left it under the greenhouse staging. Today I had another look, there are definitely 3 tiny shoots struggling to make the upper atmosphere. Come on girl - you can do it ! (Practising Olympic cheer leader routine.)
Yes, Hywel, some Fuchsias are very slow at this time of year. All mine are showing new growth except one.
Have made a note on my calendar for October to buy more fleece which will enable me to cover all my Container plants with 2 layers in my north facing greenhouse next winter , instead of one.
The Wilkinsons lady said they had some special fleece plant covers last autumn. Must also remember to look for these too. All plants need T.I.C.
Working hard on the allotment to clear gigantic weeds brought into strong new growth by the rains. Phew !
